HWY 4 – Ebbetts Pass crosses the Sierra’s from Stockton to HWY 89 near Topaz Lake. The ride from West to East takes you up some very nice mountain roads through various little towns and touristy areas. The scenery is spectacular. At Alpine Lake, the road turns into a one lane road. Usually in good condition, maybe a little goaty, but not bad. No part of HWY 4 should worry a new rider. It is much less technical than some of the other passes, but still technical enough that more spirited riders can still have fun. A lot of hunting, fishing and 4 wheeling goes on in this area, so be aware of slow movers and suddenly appearing vehicles from places you would not expect a vehicle to come from.

Combine this route with another pass like or HWY 88 for a nice loop.

long steady climb east from Angel’s Camp to Mosquito Lake atop of the pass, the road drops drastically and with many switchback curves down the mountainside. One of the most impressive motorcycle roads in the state and no traffic to see.
